Math at KU
Our Department
With about 31 tenure/tenure-track faculty and 62 graduate students, our department is small enough to be friendly and large enough to give students a broad background and a wide choice of areas of mathematics. Our recent graduates include postdocs and professors, financial analysts, and software and data engineers. We have an active Graduate Student Organization, a student chapter of the Association for Women in Mathematics and a KU SIAM Student Chapter.
- The Department of Mathematics has an internationally recognized faculty and a strong graduate program leading to both the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees.
- A broad range of programs is possible including algebra, analysis, combinatorics, control theory, dynamical systems, geometry, numerical analysis, probability, statistics, stochastic analysis/control, partial differential equations, set theory, and topology.
- The department has a long tradition of excellence—granting the first Ph.D. in mathematics west of the Mississippi in 1895.
